Perfect for groups of any size as well as busy individuals. Indy Headshots offers an efficient headshot solution with minimal interruption of your day. We service central Indiana and beyond.

Studio
Studio headshots are easy peasy with Indy Headshots. The large ground floor studio is conveniently located in Carmel, Indiana. With plenty of free front door parking and no stairs to climb, the studio is easily accessible and provides a relaxing atmosphere. Singles and groups are welcome. Perfect for new hires and others who miss "photo day." Open by appointment only.

Location
Location sessions provide a unique backdrop for your headshot. Noblesville Town Square is a great location and a personal favorite. A mix of old and modern architecture along with greenery and ease of access make it a great spot. Where do you want to go? Location sessions are normally outside, but can be indoors. Weather dependent unless you're brave. We service central Indiana and beyond.
What Type Of Session
Studio
This is a typical studio head and shoulders portrait on a black background modified slightly with light. A safe corporate pose.
On-site Studio
Same as the studio, but on-site. A traditional H&S pose on a cloud grey background. Studio quality at your office (or home.)
Environmental Interior
Your office or other interior environment can be used as a custom and unique background. Individuals and groups.
Location - Outdoors
If the weather is willing then we can go outside. Often more difficult, the results can be well worth it. Individuals and groups.
Group Photos
Group photos are available in studio, on-site or on location. Environmental portraits tend to be easier due to backdrop size limitations.
Virtual Group Image
Schedules and small spaces can make a team photo impossible. Digital group images solve that problem.
Which Background?
Backgrounds should compliment your headshot, not distract. A simple background is usually best. Solid medium grey and white are our two most popular choices. Studio background choices include: solid grey, black, white and assorted colors (some with patterns.) Studio sessions offer more choices compared to on-site sessions. Custom backgrounds available by request and an extra fee.
Solid Grey
Solid grey is our default background. Grey is extremely versatile and can be modified with lighting to go lighter or darker. As a neutral, grey can go with anything.
Solid White
White is a good choice if matching backgrounds for a consistent look on your website is important. A white background can easily be matched regardless of when and where a portrait is created. Our white backdrop is available in studio and on-site at your location.
Dark Grey / Black
A dark background provides a clean and classic look. It's a simple and timeless look, which can help the focus remain on the subject's face and features.
Textured / Color
Cloud grey is a standard, but not as popular as it once was. (See sample image above titled "On-site Studio" under "What Type Of session.") Custom, colored and digital backgrounds available for an extra fee.

Digital Backgrounds / Background Removal
Some companies want all their employee headshots to have a consistent background, even if they work in different locations. While white is easy to match, they want something different and unique. That's where I come in! I use digital tools to remove the original background and give them a transparent file or add a new background that matches their vibe.

What should I wear for my headshot session?
The focus of your headshot should be on you, not your outfit. Keep it simple and professional, and you’ll be sure to look your best in your photos.Â
Here are some tips to help you choose the right outfit:
Stick to solid, neutral colors like black, white, grey, or navy that flatter your skin tone and align with your professional brand. Avoid brand logos and bold patterns or prints that can be distracting or overpowering.
Consider layering your clothing. Layers such as a jacket or sweater can work well.
Dress appropriately for the occasion: Think about the purpose of your headshot and the industry you work in. For example, if you work in a corporate environment, you may want to wear a suit or dress pants and a blazer. If you work in a creative industry, you may be able to get away with something more casual and stylish.
Make sure it fits well: Your clothing should fit well and be comfortable to wear. (The top button of jackets should be buttoned.) Avoid anything that’s too tight or too loose, as this can be unflattering in photos. Long sleeves are usually recommended over short sleeves.
Pay attention to details: Make sure your clothing is clean, ironed, and free of wrinkles.
Consider accessories like jewelry or a scarf, but don’t overdo it. Keep it very basic. Simple is usually better.
Avoid anything too trendy: While it’s important to look stylish and modern, avoid anything too trendy that may look outdated in a few years. Stick to classic styles that will stand the test of time.
- Tidy up any facial hair and check for stray hairs in unwanted places (nose, ears, chin, cheeks, neckline) and remove them.
- Glasses – Please read the “Can I Wear My Glasses?” FAQ for more information. Spoiler – Don’t wear “transitions.”
- Please read the “How do I prepare for my session?”
Remember your hair brush, comb or anything else needed for last minute touchups. A restroom and dressing room are available, but please come dressed and ready to go.
How do I prepare for my session?
Headshot Session Prep
Trim or shape facial hair and remove any stray hairs (nose, ears, chin, brows).
Avoid trying a brand-new hairstyle right before your session.
Get a good night’s rest and stay hydrated.
Skip heavy drinking the night before.
Wear well-fitted, simple clothing in classic colors.
Bring a brush/comb and a backup outfit or accessory.
Relax—I’ll guide you through the rest.
Can I wear eyeglasses for my session?
If you normally wear glasses, you probably want them in your headshot. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
Avoid transition lenses – These darken when exposed to light (indoors or outdoors), which makes it look like you’re wearing sunglasses in your photo. Please bring a pair without transition lenses if possible.
- Avoid tinted lenses – These cause a color cast.
Reflections can be an issue – Prescription glasses all reflect light differently, and some lenses make it nearly impossible to avoid glare, even with careful studio lighting. Outdoors can be even more of a problem.
- Distortion can be an issue – Some prescriptions distort your facial features.
Your options:
Bring a spare pair of glasses without transition lenses.
Bring a pair of glasses with an anti-reflective coating. These can reduce glare, but may not remove all reflections (they can also cause a color cast.)
- Ask your optician if you can borrow or purchase your frames empty (without any lenses.)
If you’re comfortable, take some photos with and without glasses so you’ll have both options. (And Mike will have extra editing options.)
What Mike can do:
In most cases, I can adjust my lighting to reduce or eliminate reflections.
- If not in camera, I can usually remove glass glare using editing / retouching techniques.Â
However, depending on your prescription, reflections may still show up. Preparing ahead with a backup option helps us get the best results.
Which background should I choose?
Which background should you choose?

Choose a background that will look timeless. Rules can be broken, but dark backgrounds pair beautifully with dark clothing (low key), while light clothing shines on white (high key). Our versatile medium solid gray works with any outfit and is our default studio and on-site choice. For environmental or outdoor sessions, we’ll help select a location and background that complements both your style and your brand.
What's your studio address?
The studio is located near midtown Carmel. The studio address is not published because the studio is only open by appointment. I’m usually only there when I have scheduled sessions. The studio is otherwise locked and closed. The space is sometimes used for special events or by other photographers and interruptions are not appreciated. The studio address is sent to you with your session confirmation.
How long does a session take?
Most sessions take between 10 – 60 minutes, depending on the package and number of looks. Group sessions or environmental setups may take longer. A basic studio headshot session takes 10 – 15 minutes. On-site studio sessions can go quickly with each person only taking 5 – 10 minutes.Â
What’s the difference between studio and environmental headshots?

Studio-style headshots use a plain background for a clean, classic look. Environmental headshots include elements of your surroundings - such as an office or workspace - to add context and personality. Location sessions are normally outdoors.
I need a full body image - can you do more than a headshot?
More than head and shoulders...

While a “head and shoulders” portrait is the traditional headshot, we also create close up face portraits, 3/4, full body and group portraits (including digital composite group portraits.) Let Mike know when you schedule your session if you want something other than a traditional corporate headshot. The studio works best for full body photos.
I don't want a safe corporate image. Do you work with creatives?

More than corporate...
Indy Headshots is perfect for established or aspiring models, actors and other creatives. We provide single headshots or multiple images for "comp" cards. Sample image is from an exterior location session.
